Red Raiders forced to settle for 7th tie

Bellingham’s boys’ soccer team allowed a 70th minute goal and had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Anacortes in a Northwest Conference contest on Saturday, April 25, at Whatcom Community College’s Orca Field.

Dane Thurston scored for the Red Raiders off an assist from Carlos Velasco in the 20th minute.

“First half was very good, we kept control of the game and had a lot of possession,” Bellingham coach Matt Zigulis said in a phone interview. “We had a great team goal that started in the back and got played up to Carlos, who found Dane for the nice finish. Anacortes came out with intensity in the second. Toward the end it was a lot of back and forth, there were a lot of chances for both teams to score. Those final minutes were pretty exciting with a lot of counter attacks.”

Bellingham settled for its seventh tie this season. It got captain Noe Bentancourt-Cruz back from a suspension in the second half, and Zigulis said he made a big impact creating scoring chances.

Bellingham hosts Sedro-Woolley next at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at Northwest Soccer Park.
