Nooksack Valley’s boys’ soccer team scored a crucial 2-1 Northwest Conference win over Lynden Christian on Saturday, April 25, at Bender Fields, to give the Pioneers the inside edge on the NWC’s top 1A seed.
Luke VanWingerden and David Flores scored for the Pioneers, and Cody Sieving netted one for Lynden Christian.
“It was a great game, you could tell it meant something to both teams,” Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. “It was up and down, fast-paced, both teams played really hard and I thought that especially our last 70 minutes were really good. Coming off a poor performance against Blaine the other day, I thought our guys played a pretty solid game today.”
De Ruyter was impressed with Jake Poag’s play in goal for LC as he made six saves. Lucas Roetcisoender and Nate Hielkema also combined for physical play in the Lyncs’ back line.
VanWingerden and center back William Kingma were the Pioneers standouts as they continuously created chances for their team.
Lynden Christian plays next at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at Civic Stadium against Sehome. Nooksack Valley is off until 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at Anacortes for the Pioneers regular season finale.
