Pioneers comeback falls short against Sedro-Woolley

Nooksack Valley’s boys’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Sedro-Woolley on Thursday, April 23, at Janicki Fields, its first defeat since March 30 against Bellingham.

Sedro-Woolley scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but Nooksack Valley came back with a goal of its own by Rigoberto Gonzales. That 43rd minute goal was assisted by Luis Garcia, and gave the team a spark, coach Valentin Villalobos said in a phone interview.

“The first half I think the entire team were not on their game 100 percent, and after we scored they got all motivated and put pressure on,” Villalobos said.

The Pioneers had a difficult time keeping up with the Cubs’ quick players, and adjusting to the speed with which the ball moved on the turf surface, he added.

Nooksack Valley plays again at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Bender Fields against Lynden Christian.
