Bellingham’s boys’ soccer team was able to hold steady and earn a 1-1 tie with a late goal against Lynden in a Northwest Conference game on Thursday, April 23, at Civic Stadium.
Per Wolfisberg had put the Lions up in the 65th minute with the assist to Alejandro Huante. Eduardo Perez-Santos struck back nine minutes later off a pass from Anders Botterrill for the Red Raiders.
“To concede a goal and not give up and to get one back at the end was huge for us,” Bellingham coach Matt Zigulis said in a phone interview. “Hopefully we can build momentum. Both teams had a lot riding on this game, brought a lot of effort. It was an intense game.”
Perez-Santos scored his first varsity goal in his first game playing forward. He filled in for captain Noe Bentancourt-Cruz, who is serving a suspension until the second half of Bellingham’s next game.
Lynden’s Gerardo Quiroz and Huante impressed Zigulis in the midfield with the pressure they put on Bellingham. The coach also complemented Lynden goalkeeper Hector Gutierrez’s ability to distribute the ball from the back.
Bellingham takes on Anacortes at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Whatcom Community College’s Orca Field. Lynden hosts Burlington-Edison on Tuesday, April 28, at Bender Fields.
