Ferndale’s boys soccer team couldn’t dig itself out of a first-half 2-0 hole and suffered a 4-1 Northwest Conference loss to Burlington-Edison on Tuesday, April 21, at home.
Josh Garza scored the Golden Eagles’ goal off of an assist by Luis Morin. After Garza’s goal made it 2-1 in the second half, the Tigers’ Kris Nilsen scored on a rebounded save by Ferndale goalkeeper Fulgencio Schonborn, effectively deflating the Ferndale comeback attempt.
“They were better than we were today,” Ferndale coach Rigel Weis said in a phone interview. “The boys were willing to put in the effort and did what they could. I think they got a little unlucky a couple times.”
Garza and Joshua Seig offered strong play and leadership in the middle, Weis said. He also highlighted Tate Freeman’s play in the back, where he stopped a handful of Burlington-Edison scoring opportunities before they started.
