Hoping to get out of a close, sloppy game against Anacortes with a tie, the Lynden boys’ soccer team suffered a 3-2 Northwest Conference loss to the Seahawks on a last-minute goal Tuesday, April 21, at Bender Fields.
Lynden suffered an own-goal in the 21st minute to give itself a one-goal deficit going into halftime. Jonathan Lara was able to tie it back up midway through the second half off an assist from goalkeeper Hector Gutierrez.
An error in the Lynden back gave Anacortes the opportunity to take the lead and the win in the final minute, and the Seahawks took it.
“It could have gone either way all game long,” Lynden coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview. “We just made mental mistakes and I didn’t feel we played on top of our game.”
The Lions jumped out to an early lead when Gerardo Quiroz assisted Nicolas Parris on a goal in the second minute, but Anacortes knotted it up just four minutes later.
“We missed two open-net shots that your grandmother could have scored,” the Lions’ frustrated coach said. “I just think we’re still pretty immature and our communication isn’t where it needs to be.”
Smiley plans on having his team practice in the gym tomorrow to get ready for the turf of Civic Stadium, where the Lions will take on Bellingham at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23. He said there are other adjustments the team will have to make to win that game, though.
“If we had the maturity, we’re right there,” he said. “They were the better team, but we just don’t have it right now. We’re lacking leadership and maturity. We have a lot of individual talent, but we need to bring it all together.”
