Ferndale’s boys’ soccer team only needed one goal to defeat Northwest Conference rival Lynden 1-0 on Monday, April 6, at the Northwest Soccer Park.
Josh Seig beat two men on the dribble at the top of the box and made his way to the end line, drawing Lynden goalkeeper Hector Gutierrez out of the net. Seig turned and found Josh Garza at the top of the six-yard box, where Garza was able to finish the play and score the game’s lone goal.
“The lead-up included a couple of plays from the outside where we tried to swing it in,” Ferndale coach Rigel Weis said in a phone interview. “The ball found Seig and he created the next part of the play. It was a good team build-up on that play and good individual effort by Seig to create the opportunity and find the right pass.”
Gutierrez tried to create some scoring chances off of free kicks, but the Ferndale defense stood strong, even thwarting multiple Lynden corner kicks. The Golden Ealges also held NWC scoring leader Nicolas Parris without a goal.
