Pioneers break out in second half to top Meridian

Nooksack Valley scored all of its goals in the second half for a 5-0 Northwest Conference win over Meridian on Wednesday, April 1, at Meridian.

“First half we were trying to play a different game with them,” Nooksack Valley coach Valentin Villalobos said in a phone interview. “We were trying to pass the ball wide and get the ball across the field. At halftime I told them the wide play wasn’t going to work for us, so we have to play more aggressive and take more shots on goal. We had to play the way we know how to play. I told them pressure right away and they did at minute 45 and the second goal was minute 51 and after that we started coming along.”

Brent Berends, Luis Garcia, Luke VanWingerden, Levi VanWingerden and William Kingma each scored for the Pioneers.

“I got to give a lot of credit to Meridian. They were short on subs and in the first half they ran their hearts out,” Villalobos said. “Second half they tried to push up a bit and left them open in the back. That’s how we started scoring.”

Nooksack Valley hosts Blaine at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at home. Meridian plays at 6 p.m. Monday, April 6, at Burlington-Edison.
