Goal in final minutes gives Ferndale tie with Bellingham

Bellingham and Ferndale battled to a 1-1 tie in a Northwest Conference boys’ soccer match-up on Wednesday, April 1, at Ferndale.

Noe Betancourt-Cruz got scoring started in the 60th minute for Bellingham when a ball was passed his way after a bit of confusion in the box.

Ferndale’s Bailey Graf responded in the 73rd minute, assisted by Patrick Hegarty.

“The field was pretty soft and a bit marshy, so it was hard to move the ball quickly and that might have played into our hands a bit more,” Ferndale coach Rigel Weis said in a phone interview. “Once they got their goal on a big of an error by our back line, but we responded well. Getting that equalizer with a few minutes left was a good testament to their character and how they played.”

Bellingham goalkeeper Joe Worley saved five Golden Eagle shots, while Ferndale’s Nikita Leonovets grabbed five shots in the first half and Fulgencio Schonborn had three saves.

Ferndale plays again at 4 p.m. Monday, April 6, at home against Lynden in an NWC game. Bellingham plays at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at Mount Baker.
