Sehome came back from a 3-1 deficit, but Mount Baker scored a controversial goal in the final minutes to keep the game a 4-4 tie on Wednesday, April 1, at Northwest Soccer Park in a Northwest Conference game.
In the 73rd minute, Zach Yurchuk scored his second goal for Mount Baker on a ball Sehome coach John Sylvester said he thought was in the keeper’s hands, but the officials declined to call a foul. Minutes beforehand, the Mariners had a goal overturned on an offsides call.
“It was a wild and crazy second half, but it was pretty much all Sehome and Mount Baker’s keeper really stepped up and played great,” Sylvester said in a phone interview. “We woke up and shifted some players and bombarded them with shots and scored some nice goals. We thought we had it done at 4-3, and those calls on top of each other at critical times seemed to make a difference. I told the boys we just need to play with that intensity the whole game and not let it get so close.”
Sehome’s Ethan Hunger also scored a pair of goals. Noah Byford and Jack Willis also scored for the Mariners. Taylor Bruntil and Johnny Mata were the Mountaineers other goal scorers.
Sehome takes on Squalicum at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at Civic Stadium. Mount Baker hosts Bellingham at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at home.
