Meridian falls on losing end of a close match

The shorthanded Meridian boys’ soccer team came up short in a back-and-forth match against Sedro-Woolley in its 5-4 loss on Tuesday, March 24, at Meridian High School.

The Trojans’ Rico Martinez led the team with two goals and Cisco Mendoza added two assists in the match.

“We had guys out due to injury today. It caused a slow start for us,” Meridian coach Joe Spencer said in a phone interview. “The second half rolled around and we re-committed ourselves. It was a tale of two halves for us today.”

Spencer highlighted Martinez for scoring two goals in a position he normally doesn’t play and Banner Hafner, who scored a goal in his first varsity game of the season.

Meridian takes on Lynden Christian next at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, at Bender Fields.
