Borderites overcome Birnel’s hat trick

Blaine overcame a Jake Birnel hat trick on free kicks to take a 4-2 non-conference win over Meridian on Thursday, March 19, at Pipeline Fields.

Saul Magallon scored twice for the Borderites, and Kyle Sentkowski added a goal and an assist.

Carl De Belen also added a goal for Blaine and Zack Oakley, Brendan Schmidt and Gavin McPahil each added an assist. That teamwork was what impressed Blaine coach Giovanni Quesada, he said in a phone interview.

“In the worst conditions there was a lot of communication and a lot of runs,” Quesada added.

Blaine takes on Nooksack Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Pipeline Fields. Meridian hosts Bear Creek the same day at noon.
