Success on corner kicks leads Pioneers past Lions

Nooksack Valley scored twice off of corner kicks to take a 2-1 non-conference win over Lynden on Wednesday, March 18, at Nooksack Valley Elementary.

Luke VanWingerden scored first for the Pioneers off of Julio Garcia’s corner kick. But Lynden came back with a goal by Nicholas Parris to knot it up before the half. The assist went to Jonathan Lara.

“(Lara) played this floating ball over the top, over the back line and Nicholas timed it perfectly,” Lynden coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview. “He held off the center back and put it in with the inside of his foot on the far post. Nooksack was really aggressive. They’re a really good team and they’re going to give a lot of teams problems.”

David Flores gave Nooksack Valley the edge when he took a loose ball after a corner kick and hammered it into the back of the net.

“I was hoping for (success on set pieces),” Nooksack Valley coach Valentin Villalobos said in a phone interview. “The guys have been working really hard and they’re really stepping up when they have to. I’m proud of all the hard work they’ve been doing.”

Nooksack Valley takes on Blaine at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at Pipeline Fields. Lynden plays Kayhi, from Alaska, at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, at home.
