Lynden Christian’s boys’ soccer team shut out Kayhi, a school from Ketchikan, Alaska, in a 4-0 win on Wednesday, March 18, at home.
Cody Fransen, Nate Hielkema and Liam Kroontje each had goals for the Lyncs, and the fourth came on an own goal by Kayhi. Jo Meppelink and Noah Bartz each added assists for LC.
The own goal came off an LC corner kick by Derek Kamena that the Lyncs would have scored on anyway, coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview.
Hielkema’s goal, assisted by Bartz, was one of the purest goals De Ruyter said he’d ever seen. Bartz crossed the ball in from outside the box and Hielkema was able to head it home from the opposite post.

De Ruyter also praised the work of Lucas Roetcisoender in the back line, who communicated well with the other defenders and did a “really solid job in the middle of cleaning things up,” he said.
Lynden Christian plays again at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Mount Baker.
