PREP BOYS’ SOCCER PREVIEW: Nooksack Valley Pioneers

Coach: Valentin Villalobos

Last year: Finished 4-11-2 overall and 2-8-2 in the Northwest Conference. ... Fell 2-0 to King’s in the district playoffs.

Players to watch: William Kingma (Sr., D), Kyle Macy (Sr., D), Rigoberto Gonzales (Jr., M), Luis Garcia (Sr., M), David Flores (So., F), Luke VanWingerden (Sr., F)

Outlook: Coach Valentin Villalobos sees more and more kids turn out for the Pioneers’ team each year. This year they reached 35 kids trying out and that gives Villalobos plenty to choose from when selecting his starters. The main faces will be defenders William Kingma and Kyle Macy, midfielders Rigoberto Gonzales and Luis Garcia and forwards David Flores and Luke VanWingerden. Still this team has some depth to it. “We’re looking stronger than last year,” Villalobos said in a phone interview. “Our goals are to do better than any prior years.” The strength for the team will be at the defensive end but between VanWingerden and Flores, the Pioneers do have some attacking power. “They really want it to happen this year, and leave everything on the field, just do better than last year,” Villalobs said. “They’re so committed to it.”
