PREP BOYS’ SOCCER PREVIEW: Meridian Trojans

Coach: Joe Spencer

Last year: Finished 4-13-0 overall and 3-9-0 in the Northwest Conference. ... Lost 2-1 to South Whidbey in the district tournament.

Players to watch: Jake Birnel (Sr., M), Jordan Birnel (So., M), Limny Nolasco (Sr., D), Alan Eyoub (Jr., F)

Outlook: The Trojans lost seven starters from last year’s team including goalkeeper Joe Worley who transferred to Bellingham. This year’s team will be forced to forge their own identity with the four returning starters. “We’re a bit of a work in progress,” coach Joe Spencer said in a phone interview. “We’re relatively athletic and it’s nice to have a decent amount of experience in key positions.” Returning to the team are the Birnels. The two midfielders are a vital part of the Trojans’ attack and pair well with junior forward Alan Eyoub, one of the Northwest Conference’s top goalscorers from last season. Meanwhile, senior Limny Nolasco captains the back. “It’s the same goal as always — to be the No. 1 1A team. You can only compare yourselves to other 1A schools and we hope to be one of the best ones.”
