PREP BOYS’ SOCCER PREVIEW: Lynden Lions

Coach: Drew Smiley

Last year: Finished 5-5-6 overall and 4-3-5 in the Northwest Conference. ... Missed the playoffs for the third straight season after a state title in 2011.

Players to watch: Hector Gutierrez (Sr., GK), Girardo Quiroz (Jr, M), Nicolas Parris (So., F)

Outlook: Eight of the Lions’ starters from a season ago return to the team as the Lions look to get back to their first postseason since 2011. The team is still young but is led by one of the top goalkeepers in the state, as Hector Gutierrez returns to the green and gold. Also helping lead the charge is Girardo Quiroz at central midfielder and Nicolas Parris up top. But what you see is what you get with Lynden, coach Drew Smiley said in a phone interview. “Really simplicity is it. Play simple, have success. Don’t complicate things. We have the right tools. The rest will take care of itself,” Smiley said. The Lions will have to navigate the rough waters that is the Class 2A division in the Northwest Conference to make the playoffs but they’re plenty equipped to do so.
