PREP BOYS’ SOCCER PREVIEW: Bellingham Red Raiders

Coach: Matt Zigulis

Last year: Finished 8-4-4 overall and 7-4-1 in the Northwest Conference. ... Despite a strong regular season, they fell victim to a strong Northwest Conference and missed the postseason.

Players to watch: Noe Betancourt-Cruz (Sr., F), Blake Langei (Jr., D), Joe Worley (So., GK)

Outlook: The Red Raiders boast plenty of returners to go with a crop of new faces, so during the early season Bellingham will be trying to lock down the chemistry on the field. The luxury coach Matt Zigulis has at his side is flexibility. His team has several players that can play myriad positions. “It’s fantastic,” Zigulis said in a phone interview. “We have such a quick turnaround with games this season it seems like it will definitely help.” After some scoring struggles last year, the Red Raiders will lean heavily on Noe Betancourt-Cruz as the primary goalscorer while Blake Langei mans the back. Joe Worley is a transfer from Meridian that will step in at goalie for Bellingham. “I was impressed with him last year and with Logan (Schilder) not returning, it’s a nice blessing to have Joe to fall back on,” Zigulis said.
