Bartel’s hat trick sends Golden Eagles past Mountaineers

Ferndale’s girls’ soccer team used a hat trick from Jordin Bartel to top Mount Baker 5-0 in a Northwest Conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Mount Baker High School.

Bartel scored in the 12th, 16th and 45th minutes to give Ferndale (8-4-2, 7-2-1 NWC) the 3-0 lead before Christiana Salinas and Leigh Sund added two more.

“They can move the ball very well. They get it outside and send in crosses,” Baker coach Jason Jorgensen said in a phone interview. “Jordin was there to finish those crosses.”

For Baker (3-10-2, 3-8-0 NWC), it was Alex Whitson’s 25 saves on Ferndale’s 35 shots that stood out.

“Alex did a fantastic job,” Jorgensen said. “She did her best to make critical saves. Eventually some were going to go in.”

Baker faces Bellingham on Thursday, Oct. 23, at home, needing a win to move from the No. 3 seed to the No. 2 seed in the NWC 1As, which is also dependent on the results from Lynden Christian. Ferndale plays Lynden on Thursday at Ferndale High School.
