Bellingham’s girls’ soccer team got off to a rough start, but used five consecutive goals to earn a 5-1 Northwest Conference win over Meridian on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Meridian.
Meridian went up early as Janessa Murphy scored in the fourth minute, but Bellingham came back quickly with a Brooke Baker goal.
From there it was all Bellingham, as Payton Schwinger added a goal before Kayla Heidenreich had a hat trick to go along with her two assists. Mia Hodges and Morgan Jones each had an assist.
“It was a big blah for us at the beginning,” Bellingham coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. “When they scored we kind of came to life and found some open space and moved the ball. We wasted shots early. Their keeper is good enough that shots from a distance she can gobble up. We needed to possess longer and combine to get a better look.”
Bellingham hosts Lynden on Thursday, Oct. 16, at Civic Stadium. Meridian travels to Ferndale for a game the same day.
