8 Mariners score in big win

Sehome’s girls’ soccer team poured on 11 goals as the Mariners topped Nooksack Valley 11-1 in a Northwest Conference matchup Thursday, Oct. 2, at Nooksack Valley Elementary.

Eight different Mariners scored in the victory: Devin Grahn (2), Stephanie Mindnich, Christina Funk, Abby Webster (2), Andrea Zucchi (2), Fiona Dawson, Zoe Dietrich and Lyla Pagnotta.

“We just wanted to work on a few things, try to keep possession,” Sehome coach Andria Fountain said in a phone interview. “Nooksack has improved over the years, so even though it was lopsided we had to work for our goals more than in the past. I didn’t mess with our defense too much because Nooksack had good counter-attacks and were a threat to score.”

Tori VandeHoef scored Nooksack Valley’s lone goal to prevent the combined shutout by Sehome goalkeepers Nicole Carlson and Camryn Ranson.

Sehome takes on Sedro-Woolley on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Northwest Soccer Park. Nooksack Valley plays Lynden the same day at Bender Fields.
