It took 23 minutes before Meridian’s girls’ soccer team got its first goal, but once it came several followed in a 5-0 Northwest Conference win for the Trojans against Blaine on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Meridian.
Emily Kooiman opened up the scoring with a goal in the 23rd minute off of an assist from Janessa Murphy. Lexi McKinnon added one seconds later, followed by a Payton Lunde goal in the 34th minute.
“We weren’t really sure what to expect from Blaine,” Meridian coach Terry Tigert said in a phone interview. “I’m impressed that we were able to move them around in certain positions to throw Blaine off, and players were adjusting very well to new positions.”
The tactical changes in Tigert’s lineup proved worthy of future consideration, she said.
Goals by Emily Brackinreed and another by Lunde rounded out the strong conference win. Ryley Zapien finished with three assists, and Murphy had the other two.
