Sehome Mariners girls’ soccer preview

Coach: Andria Fountain

Last year: 11-4-3 overall, 10-1-1 NWC (second place). Scored 36 goals while allowing 22, earning a spot in the 2A Northwest District playoffs before falling to Lake Washington and Bellingham in back-to-back games. Biggest win was a 4-3 victory over Squalicum on Sept. 12, handing the Storm one of its three total losses all season. Also beat state runner-up Bellingham in their only regular-season meeting.

Players to watch: Katie Mindnich (Sr., D), Stephanie Mindnich (Sr., F), Devin Grahn (Jr., M)

Outlook: The Sehome girls’ soccer team will look a good deal different than the team that finished second in the NWC last year. Fountain lost half of her starting lineup to graduation, and she’s going to use the early part of the season to solidify her starting rotation. “We’ll have to wait for that first game or two,” she said in a phone interview. “Right now we’re just working on getting touches on the ball and learning how each other plays.” Thus far, Fountain is pleased with the play of her midfield, watching her team mature and learn how to string long possessions together.
