Mount Baker Mountaineers girls’ soccer preview

Coach: Jason Jorgensen

Last year: 4-10-2 overall, 2-8-2 NWC (11th place). The Mountaineers posted 18 goals against 47 allowed, claiming their biggest win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Blaine on Oct. 17. Mount Baker fell 4-0 to Lynden Christian in the first round of the Class 1A Northwest District playoffs.

Players to watch: Taylor VanBrocklin (Sr., D), Lacey Postlewait (Sr., M), Jessica Mata (Sr., M).

Outlook: It was a difficult season for the Mountaineers last year, finishing near the bottom of the conference and scoring the second fewest goals in the league in the process. Jorgensen will again have his work cut out for him following the departure of seven seniors, including his leading goal scorer, India Hines. VanBrocklin returns as the team’s top option on offense. Another year of playing time under her belt should help the senior forward continue to grow into her role and help elevate the offense beyond 18 goals this season. Mount Baker’s strength might come from the middle with the return of both Mata and Postlewait. Postlewait is one of the fastest players in the conference, and her ability to swarm to the ball will help sustain possessions for the Mountaineers’ attack and lessen the pressure on their defense.
