Coach: Joe Gonzalez
Last year: 8-7-2 overall, 7-4-1 NWC (fifth place). Boasted 33 goals against 22 allowed last season, going 0-2 in the Class 3A Northwest District Playoffs in losses to Meadowdale and Marysville Pilchuck. Big wins came against Bellingham in the regular-season finale 2-1 and over Sehome.
Players to watch: Carly Bannerman (Sr., D), Jordin Bartel (Sr., F).
Outlook: Gonzalez was pleasantly surprised to be presented with a unique problem: too many girls turned out this year 61 in total, he said. Ferndale is coming off a strong season, returning key starters Bartel on offense and Bannerman on defense. Bannerman is slated to play for Saint Martin’s next year, proving to be one of the best defenders in the state. “We have not made the mark we wanted to make since I’ve been coaching,” Gonzalez said in a phone interview. “For the first time, every girl is on the same page. I don’t have anybody that’s causing me problems. They are all into it.” Bartel’s 11 goals last season make her one of the most feared forwards in the league, so at very least Ferndale has a go-to weapon up front.
