Coach: Kelly Tuski
Last year: 5-10-2 overall, 3-8-1 NWC (10th place). Recorded 25 goals versus 50 allowed, securing its biggest win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Lynden Christian on Sept. 19. Lost to South Whidbey 4-0 in the first round of the Class 1A Northwest District playoffs.
Players to watch: Ashley Quesada (Jr., M), Emily Roe (Sr., M), Gretchen Kordas (Sr., M).
Outlook: There is reason for optimism for Blaine’s girls’ soccer team, bringing back veteran leadership in Roe and Kordas, as well as talented junior forward Quesada, who led the team with 11 goals last season. “I’m really excited for our team work and bonding overall,” Tuski said in a phone interview. “I’m excited for what our team as a unit can do.” The Borderites struggled at times last year in the heart of NWC play, but should have the opportunity to get off to a good start this year, facing some of the lower finishers last year in the first six games. Tuski said that her midfield will be her most dangerous unit, and that the offense will largely filter through there.
