Bellingham Red Raiders girls’ soccer preview

Coach: Mark Wright

Last year: 13-7-5 overall, 6-3-3 NWC (seventh place). Finished with 61 goals versus 32 allowed en route to a remarkable run in the playoffs. Bellingham went 2-2 in the 2A Northwest District Playoffs before defeating Ridgefield, Archbishop Murphy and Squalicum at state and losing 2-0 to Sumner in the 2A championship game.

Players to watch: Hattie North (Sr., M), Mia Hodges (Sr., M); Brooke Baker (Jr., M).

Outlook: The Red Raiders made a stunning turnaround last season, going from a team that barely made it into the playoffs to playing for a state title. And while they fell to Sumner in the title game, that confidence and cohesion is rolling over from last year, Wright said. “I think it became pretty clear early on what we have to do now,” Wright said in a phone interview. “It took us awhile to figure it out.” Senior captains North and Hodges place Bellingham’s strength in the midfield, something Wright said his team will look to exploit more so this year than in the past. Baker, who scored the winning goal in the state semifinals, also will be more involved after scoring 10 goals last year.
