Lynden Christian ends season on high note

Lynden Christian’s football team won its season finale against South Whidbey 35-6 on Friday, Nov. 7, at Lynden Christian High School.

South Whidbey got off to a quick start with a four-yard touchdown pass from Parker Collins to Mo Hamsa two minutes into the game. The Lyncs responded with a touchdown of their own with three minutes left in the first quarter on a 71-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Roetcisoender to Nathan Rusnack.

Lynden Christian dominated the rest of the game, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Lyncs defense had three interceptions and recovered a fumble. South Whidbey was only able to convert six first downs the entire game, as well.

The second quarter is when the Lynden Christian blew the game open. The Lyncs scored three touchdowns in the quarter, two passing touchdowns and a running touchdown by Roetcisoender, to end the half with a 28-6 lead. Lynden was able to score another touchdown in the third quarter on a 20-yard pass from Roetcisoender to Travis Roosma to make the score 35-6.

“It’s nice to end on a win, we had some tough luck the last two games,” coach Kaemingk said. “They played hard.”

This game was the last game for the seniors this year, who were freshman when Kaemingk took over the program, Kaemingk said.

Senior wide receiver Rusnak started the Lynden Christian scoring with a 71-yard touchdown reception toward the end of the first quarter, capping off his last game in a big way.

“It’s special, four years on this field, wearing this jersey,” Rusnak said. “We’re pumped to have the opportunity to do this.”

Senior linebacker Sam Mumford showed emotion after the game along with Rusnak, who were taking in their last moments on the football field.

“It’s been a battle for every inch, it’s been great fighting with my brothers on my side,” Mumford said. “I play for the guys next me and it’s been absolutely great.”

Lynden Christian ends this season with a 6-4 record overall, with a 2-4 record in the Northwest Conference.
