Squalicum breaks into top 10 in final AP poll

Back on Sept. 26, Squalicum’s football team was facing an 0-2 league record following back-to-back losses against Lynden at home and Sedro-Woolley on the road. Fast forward to Week 10, and the Storm hasn’t lost since.

Squalicum (7-2) won its final five games of the regular season, earned the Northwest Conference’s No. 3 seed in the district playoffs and is on the brink of earning the program’s first ever state berth.

And thanks to the Storm’s recent strong play, Squalicum worked its way into the final Associated Press Washington State Prep Football Poll. The Storm was voted No. 10 in the poll that was released Wednesday, Nov. 5.

Squalicum is slated to travel to play Cascade Conference No. 2 seed Archbishop Murphy in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Besides the Storm, Lynden (8-1), Mount Baker (7-2) and Lummi (6-3) each earned spots within the top 10, or five in Class 1B’s case.

The Lions, who rallied to beat Blaine 28-21 last week at home, was ranked No. 3. Selected ahead of Lynden was No. 1-ranked Tumwater and Ellensburg at No. 2.

Lynden, the NWC champions, should have a comfortable path to the Class 2A State Tournament, facing winless Shorecrest at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Civic Stadium.

The Mountaineers shut out Lynden Christian 20-0 last week to earn a NWC 1A title, and Mount Baker jumped a spot in the poll from No. 8 to No. 7 this week.

Baker will host CC No. 2 seed Cedar Park Christian in a winner-to-state, loser-out game at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Civic Stadium.

After being omitted from the Class 1B poll last week, the Blackhawks reappeared in this week’s edition. Lummi, which will play Ranier Christian at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in Lummi for a trip to the state playoffs, was ranked No. 5.

Bothell maintained its ranking atop the Class 4A poll, Bellevue was a unanimous top selection in the 3As, Cascade Christian narrowly topped Colville for the top spot in Class 1A, Napavine took over No. 1 in Class 2B and Neah Bay remained No. 1 in the 1Bs.
