Lynden moves up to No. 3 in latest AP poll

Not only did Lynden’s 33-30 road win against Sedro-Woolley last week position the Lions to clinch the Northwest Conference 2A/3A title with a win this Friday, it also bumped the Lions up a spot in the latest Associated Press Washington State Prep Football Poll that was released Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 29.

Lynden entered last week ranked No. 4 after dropping from No. 1 following a home defeat to Ferndale. The Lions’ win over Sedro-Woolley moved Lynden up to No. 3, while Sedro-Woolley only dropped one spot to No. 6. No team ranked higher than Lynden lost, but the Lions received just enough votes to leapfrog undefeated Hockinson.

The Lions (7-1, 5-1 NWC 2A/3A) host Blaine at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, to wrap up the regular season. Beyond Lynden and Sedro-Woolley (7-1, 5-1), no other Class 2A Northwest Conference team earned recognition in the poll.

No. 1-ranked Tumwater and undefeated Ellensburg were voted ahead of Lynden. The Lions beat Ellensburg in the state semis last season before beating Tumwater in the state championship.

Quite a bit of movement existed in the Class 1A poll with both Mount Baker and Lynden Christian losing.

The Mountaineers (6-2, 4-1 NWC 1A), who were ranked No. 6 last week, took a 10-9 loss against Meridian. Baker dropped down to No. 8 in this week’s poll, and Lynden Christian (5-3, 2-3), which was ranked No. 10, lost to Nooksack Valley and didn’t crack the top 10.

Meridian (5-3, 3-2), which can clinch a playoff berth with a win this Friday, earned 18 voting points this week, but that wasn’t enough to break into the top 10.

In Class 2B, Lummi fell out of the poll. The Blackhawks were tied for the No. 5 spot last week. Their game against Lopez was postponed, and Lummi dropped out of the top five but still received 18 voting points.

Bothell held onto the top spot in Class 4A, Bellevue was ranked No. 1 in Class 3A with 15 first-place votes, Cascade Christian was ranked first in the 1As, Lind-Ritzville Sprauge stayed at No. 1 in Class 2B and Neah Bay maintained its top ranking in 1B.
