Lions fall to No. 4 in latest AP prep football poll

Following Lynden’s 37-35 loss to rival Ferndale, with nine undefeated Class 2A teams heading into last week, the question wasn’t whether the Lions would drop from their No. 1 ranking. It was how far would they fall?

That answer was revealed when the latest Associated Press Washington State Prep Football Poll was released early Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 22. Lynden (6-1, 4-1 NWC 2A/3A) dropped three spots to No. 4. The defending state champion Lions, who were riding a 33-game win streak before the loss, owned Class 2A’s No. 1 ranking since the inaugural preseason poll was released.

Tumwater, which is undefeated and has been ranked No. 2 all year, took over the top spot. Also voted ahead of Lynden in the newest poll was Ellensburg and Hockinson, both of which are undefeated.

Interestingly, Sedro-Woolley, which also is undefeated and faces Lynden this week at home in a game most figure will be for the Northwest Conference 2A/3A title, was ranked one spot behind the Lions at No. 5. The Cubs were ranked No. 6 last week.

Mount Baker (6-1, 4-0 NWC 1A), which is in the midst of a six-game win streak, stayed put at No. 6 in the Class 1A Poll. The Mountaineers beat Nooksack Valley 21-11 last week and have a rematch against Meridian this Friday. Mount Baker earned a dramatic home win over the Trojans when the two teams met in Week 5.

Speaking of Meridian (4-3, 2-2), the Trojans fell out of the top 10 with their 31-0 defeat to Lynden Christian (5-2, 2-2) last Friday, and the Lyncs actually replaced Meridian at No. 10 this week.

Lynden Christian hosts Nooksack Valley in Week 8.

Lummi (5-3) is the only other Whatcom County school garnering attention in the polls. In spite of a 50-38 loss to rival Neah Bay last week, the Blackhawks were slotted at No. 5 in the newest poll, tied with fellow 1B school Republic.

Bothell remained the top-ranked school in Class 4A, Bellevue again was selected No. 1 unanimously in the 3As, Cascade Christian and Colville tied for top billing in the 1As, Lind-Ritzville Sprague was voted No. 1 in Class 2B and Neah Bay earned 11 of 13 first-place votes in Class 1B.
