Fritsch’s big night not enough for Blaine in loss at Burlington

Mistakes and missed opportunities were too much for Blaine to overcome, despite a high level of intesity, as the Borderites dropped a Class 2A/3A Northwest Conference game at Burlington-Edison 41-22 on Friday, Oct. 17.

Standing out for the Borderites (4-3, 2-3 NWC 2A/3A) was sophomore running back Riley Fritsch, who rushed for 252 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries.

“I just felt really good about the game, and the offensive line made huge holes,” Fritsch said. “They blocked really well this game, I’m very proud of them.”

Despite Fritsch running up and down the field for most of the game, Blaine struggled to hold onto the ball with four fumbles.

Two came on the exchange between center and quarterback when the Borderites had momentum.

“Those are plays that our kids are trying and giving everything they got, but those were just bad luck plays,” Blaine head coach Jay Dodd said. “I don’t think there is anything to correct on those; those are just things that happen in the game of football.”

Though the Blaine defense played strong, big gains and trick plays really hurt the Borderites, as Burlington-Edison gained 409 yards of total offense.

“(The defense) was OK,” Dodd said. “We gave up some big plays in the passing game. We have to communicate better in the secondary and do a better job.”

The Borderites forced two three-and-outs late, which set up a sophomore quarterback Jalen Kortlever’s touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Anthony Ball.

“We just had a few mistakes, a couple turnovers, (but the defense) played really well,” Fritsch said. “They brought a lot of intensity tonight.”

Blaine next hosts Squalicum High School on Friday, Oct. 24.
