Lions remain No. 1 in Class 2A poll

The Lynden Lions were a missed Per Wolfisberg field goal away from surely taking a tumble down the Associated Press Class 2A Washington State Prep Football Poll.

But Wolfisberg’s 30-yarder was true to lift the No. 1-ranked Lions to a 23-21 win over Burlington-Edison last week, and while Tumwater stole some first-place votes away from Lynden this week, the Lions still remain atop the latest AP rankings for the eighth straight week dating back to the inaugural preseason poll.

The weekly poll, which is comprised of votes by sports editors and writers across the state, was released Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Lynden (6-0, 4-0 NWC 2A/3A) earned 13 first-place votes compared to Tumwater’s six. The Lions host rival Ferndale this week before traveling to play Sedro-Woolley in what should be the defacto Northwest Conference 2A/3A championship game.

The Cubs (6-0, 4-0 NWC 2A/3A) moved up a spot from No. 7 to No. 6 this week and are one of nine top-10 teams with perfect records intact.

The only movement in the polls among Whatcom County teams was Lummi, which dropped a spot from No. 4 to No. 5 in spite of both beating Taholah 63-6 and earning a forfeit over Crescent.

The Blackhawks (4-2) face rival Neah Bay this week at home.

Mount Baker (5-1, 3-0 NWC 1A) stayed put at No. 6 in the 1A poll amid a major overall shakeup in the 1As with Colville knocking off No. 1-ranked Freeman. The Scotties dropped to No. 5, Cascade Christian took over the top spot and Colville rose from No. 8 all the way to No. 2.

Meridian (4-2, 2-1 NWC 1A), which beat Nooksack Valley 43-15 last week, remained at No. 10 in the 1A poll.

Bothell was ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, Bellevue unanimously claimed the top 3A spot, Lind-Ritzville Sprague got 10 out of 14 votes in Class 2B and Neah Bay was ranked No. 1 in Class 1B.
