Lynden stays No. 1; Meridian, Baker remain in top 10

Last week’s matchup between Class 1A powers Mount Baker and Meridian provided all the plot twists and turns one would expect from a top-10 matchup. Comebacks, trick plays, a game-winning drive: the folks in Deming got their money’s worth.

And even though Meridian headed home with a 33-25 defeat, the Trojans didn’t lose their spot in the Associated Press Washington State Prep Football Poll, which was released early Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 8.

Meridian (3-2, 1-1 NWC 1A) fell from No. 7 to No. 10 this week, and Mount Baker (4-1, 2-0 NWC 1A), which with its win took an early lead in the league’s 1A race, stayed put at No. 6.

Lynden Christian (4-1, 1-1 NWC 1A) was the first team outside the top 10 in last week’s poll, receiving 13 voting points, but the Lyncs earned less than six votes this time.

LC most likely would vault into the top 10 next week, however, if it were to knock of the Mountaineers this Friday. The two play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in Lynden. Meridian hosts Nooksack Valley at the same time and date.

In Class 2A, Lynden has been perched atop the poll since preseason rankings were revealed, and although Tumwater stole away three first-place votes this week, the Lions still own 2A’s top spot.

Lynden (5-0, 3-0 NWC 2A/3A), which travels to play Burlington-Edison at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, received 14 of 17 first-place votes.

Lummi was the only other ranked Whatcom County school in this week’s poll. The Blackhawks, who have won three straight since opening the season with back-to-back losses, were ranked No. 4 in Class 1B. Lummi faces Taholah next at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at home.

Bothell was ranked No. 1 in the 4As, Bellevue earned all 16 first-place votes in Class 3A, Freeman earned the top spot in 1A, Lind-Ritzville Sprague was first in Class 2B and Neah Bay again was ranked No. 1 in 1B.
