Lions still No. 1, Meridian leaps to No. 7 in new prep football poll

There’s bound to be plenty of up-and-down movement in the Class 1A poll with Lynden Christian, Mount Baker, Meridian and Nooksack Valley playing each other twice this season.

Such was the case this week, as Mount Baker earned a win over Nooksack Valley and Meridian beat Lynden Christian at home.

The ramifications of last Friday’s games kept Baker (3-1, 1-0 NWC 1A) put at No. 6, Meridian (3-1, 1-0 NWC 1A) moved up to No. 7 and Lynden Christian (3-1, 0-1 NWC 1A) dropped out of the poll completely when the newest Associated Press Washington State Prep Football Poll was released Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Nooksack Valley (2-2, 0-1 NWC 1A), which was the only 1A county team not ranked in the top-10, remained on the outside again in this week’s poll.

The Mountaineers were two points away from vaulting Royal for the No. 5 spot. While the Lyncs fell out of the top 10, they were the first team off the board with 13 points.

Mount Baker hosts Meridian at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, while Nooksack Valley hosts Lynden Christian at the same time and date.

No changes existed for Lynden in the Class 2A Poll. For the fifth straight week the Lions remained ranked No. 1. But after Ellensburg earned one first-place vote a week ago, Lynden was back to being voted No. 1 unanimously.

The Lions (4-0, 2-0 NWC 2A/3A) are scheduled to face Sehome (2-2, 1-1 NWC 2A/3A) at 7 p.m. Friday in Lynden.

Sedro-Woolley (4-0, 2-0 NWC 2A/3A), which beat Squalicum 30-7 last week, remained at No. 7 but narrowed the gap between itself and No. 6 Liberty. The Cubs travel to play Blaine (3-1, 1-1 NWC 2A/3A) this week.

Lummi (2-2) jumped from No. 5 to No. 4 this week after beating Entiat 50-16. The Blackhawks host Clallam Bay at 6 p.m. Friday in their Northwest 1B League opener.

Bothell stayed on top of the Class 4A Poll, Bellevue again was the unanimous top choice in 3A, Freeman was ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Lind-Ritzville Sprague was No. 1 in Class 2B and Neah Bay took top honors in 1B.
