Three 1A county teams join Trojans in top 10

Five top 10-ranked Class 1A teams throughout the state, for the second consecutive week, suffered losses last Friday.

Whatcom County 1As were the beneficiaries when the new Associated Press Washington State Prep Football Poll was released Wednesday, Sept. 17, claiming four of the top-10 spots.

King’s, LaCenter, Meridian, Montesano and Connell each lost, opening the door for Mount Baker, Nooksack Valley and Lynden Christian to break into the top 10. The Trojans, who were No. 8 last week, were the only 1A losing team remaining in this week’s rankings.

In spite of losing 48-14, somewhat surprisingly Meridian jumped a spot to No. 7. Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley each received 27 voting points and sit at No. 8 while Lynden Christian moved to No. 10.

Baker bounced back from a season-opening loss to beat Oroville 54-6 on the road last Friday, the Pioneers improved to 2-0 with a 40-34 win against Montesano at home and Lynden Christian also improved to 2-0 with a 42-7 home victory against Sultan.

Squalicum didn’t receive enough votes to make this week’s matchup against Lynden a top-10 game, but the Storm’s 48-14 win over Meridian last Friday did grab voters’ attention. Squalicum (2-0) earned 11 voting points and was ranked 13th behind Centralia and W.F. West, which were 11th and 12th, respectively.

Lynden was one of three schools unanimously voted No. 1 in its classification. The Lions, who improved to 2-0 with a 38-21 win over Lakewood last week, earned all 16 first-place votes. Lynden and Squalicum open Northwest Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Civic Stadium.

Lummi dropped to No. 5 in the Class 1B rankings after losing to Neah Bay 38-26 last week. The defeat dropped the Blackhawks to 0-2.

Bothell earned 13 of 15 first-place votes to remain the top-ranked team in Class 4A, Bellevue was unanimously ranked No. 1 in the 3As, Freeman was the unanimous No. 1 in Class 1A, Lind Ritzville-Sprague topped the 2B poll and Neah Bay was ranked No. 1 in 2B.
