Lyncs dominate on both sides

The Lynden Christian Lyncs won their home opener in decisive fashion, beating the Sultan Turks by a score of 42-7 in a non-conference football game. The Lyncs move to 2-0 on the season, while the Turks fall to 1-1.

Lynden Christian dominated on both sides of the ball, putting up 339 total yard of offense, while allowing only 165 yards defensively.

The Lyncs looked to run early and run often.

“We’re a run first team,” LC coach Galen Kaemingk said. “Our success running really opened up the pass.”

Lyncs quarterback, junior Lucas Roetcisoender, put up impressive numbers, completing 10 passes to five different receivers. Roetcisoender also accounted for three touchdowns and 162 yards through the air.

Senior receiver Blake Mellema lead the Lyncs with 46 yards receiving, and scored a touchdown off a throw from Roetcisoender.

Seniors Ty Vander Yacht and Nathan Rusnak also caught TDs for the Lyncs.

LC had equal success running the ball, as senior Jordan Jansen ran 15 times for 92 yards and a touchdown. Mellema also scored a rushing touchdown, with a bruising 5-yard push to seal the game in the fourth quarter. Senior Blake Browning also scored a touchdown.

“We had very good offensive line play,” he said. “I’m really happy with how we controlled the ball.”

LC managed to score on each of its first three drives, really helping the Lyncs to control the pace of the game, Kaemingk said.

Defensively, the LC secondary held Sultan to 5-for-15 passing, while forcing two turnovers.

“Our secondary — all seniors — looked good at defending the pass,” Kaemingk said. “They’re pretty tough to complete much against.”

The Lyncs defensive line also contributed, sacking the Turks quarterbacks three times. LC also forced two fumbles, although Sultan managed to recover both.

The Lyncs next host Bellingham on Friday, Sept. 19, one week before opening NWC 1A play.
