Meridian benefits from major 1A poll shuffling in latest prep football poll

So long, Mount Baker. Welcome Meridian. Lynden Christian, maybe next week, and what’s up with the lack of love for Nooksack Valley?

Each Class 1A team ranked No. 4 through 9 lost last week, setting up plenty of movement in this week’s Associated Prep Washington State Prep Football Poll, which was released Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The Mountaineers, who were ranked No. 7 in the preseason poll, suffered a 35-7 loss to Sedro-Woolley and were subsequently bounced from the top 10. Meridian vaulted to No. 8 thanks to a season-opening 14-7 win against Hoquiam, and Lynden Christian received 13 voting points but did not breach the top 10 following a lopsided win against Omak.

Nooksack Valley, which put together a strong performance during its 49-35 win against Anacortes, did not receive six or more voting points. The Pioneers will get to make their case this week for top-10 consideration when they host No. 8-ranked Montesano, which earned the same 28 voting points as Meridian.

Lynden unanimously remained atop the Class 2A rankings, earning all 15 first-place votes. The Lions fairly easily dispatched 1A power King’s 48-22 during their season opener. No other 2A county schools earned more than six voting points, but Sedro-Woolley was recognized with seven votes.

Lummi, which lost its season opener 44-20 on the road against Adrian, Ore., tumbled from No. 1 to No. 4, and the Blackhawks have a high-profile matchup this week against 1B rival Neah Bay, which earned all nine first-place votes.

Bothell remained the top-ranked team in Class 4A, while 3A power Bellevue maintained its top ranking. Freeman earned all 13 first-place votes in the 1As, and Lind-Ritzville Sprague was selected the top 2B team in the state heading into Week 2.
