There’s a new leader among Whatcom County 1A teams in the state football rankings

The Meridian football team took over as the highest ranked team out of Whatcom County in the latest Class 1A Associated Press Washington State High School Football Poll, released Wednesday, while Squalicum and Lynden were bounced out of the top-10 after losing two weeks in a row.

The Trojans 50-36 win over Nooksack Valley Friday allowed Meridian (5-0) to move into the top-3 behind Royal and Connell. Nooksack had been ahead of the Trojans in last week’s rankings, but only dropped to sixth this week after the loss.

Meridian will play Mount Baker Friday in a game that could set the tone for the rest of the Class 1A regular season. Mount Baker ranks seventh after a 27-21 win over Lynden Christian last Friday.

In Class 3A, Squalicum was booted from the top-10 after losing to Oak Harbor 21-20 last Friday. The Storm will host Snohomish Saturday, with hopes of righting the ship. Meanwhile, Ferndale stood pat at No. 4 in the 3A poll behind No. 1 Eastside Catholic, No. 2 O’Dea and No. 3 Kamiakin after beating Marysville-Pilchuck 46-7. The Golden Eagles will host Stanwood (2-3) Friday.

Lynden also exited the top-10 ranks after losing to now No. 10 Lakewood 26-14 last Friday. The Lions were coming off their first 2A NWC loss since 2015. Lynden will play a Blaine team still searching for its first win Friday.

Lummi moved back three spots from No.2 to No. 5 after a blowout loss to now No. 2 Sunnyside Christian last Thursday, 84-6. The Blackhawks will look to clean things up Thursday against Tulalip Heritage, and then Saturday against Concrete.

Camas (4A) and Kalama (2B) remained atop their respective polls.
