Despite fourth-quarter rally, Sehome remains winless

It was too little, too late for the Sehome football team, as the Mariners dropped their fourth in a row this season in a 35-27 Northwest Conference loss to Anacortes on Friday, Sept. 23, at Civic Stadium.

After trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, Sehome battled all the way back to make it a one-possession game with two touchdowns in the final minute of the fourth quarter. Senior wide receiver Marcus Montag caught a 23-yard pass from Michael Mindnich with 35 seconds to go, and after Sehome recovered its onside kick, Mindnich scampered in from 2 yards out with 2.5 seconds left.

Anacortes recovered the ensuing onside kick and took a knee to seal the game. Sehome coach Bob Norvell said his team practices competing until the final whistle and that his team did just that Friday night.

“That’s what you want,” Norvell said. “We talked about having a lump in our throats last week from having a close one and not being able to pull it out, though, so those guys are going to be lumpy again.”

Sehome lost 14-12 to Lakewood on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The ALMOST turning point of the game was when…

Sehome trailed 14-0 approaching the end of the first half, and Anacortes had controlled the tempo most of the half. On the last play of the second quarter, however, Mindnich took the snap and ran straight up the middle for a 51-yard touchdown as time expired. The Mariners came out after halftime with a renewed spirit, and less than three minutes into the third quarter Mindnich scored on a 1-yard run to tie the game.

Can’t stop the run

Anacortes’ Michael Aydelotte was a bulldozer on the ground as he ran the ball 29 times for 207 yards and a touchdown for the first score of the game. The Seahawks rushed for 289 yards total.

What does it mean?

Sehome remains the only team yet to record a win in the Class 2A NWC. Its next chance for a win will be Friday, Sept. 30, at Sedro-Woolley.
