After losing three in a row to Sedro-Woolley, Lynden got its revenge, beating the Cubs 35-14 at Sedro-Woolley High School on Friday, Sept. 23.
The Lions trailed 7-0 early after Bryce Hornbeck returned a punt for 57 yards for a touchdown. The ball shouldn’t have been kicked to him, Lynden coach Curt Kramme said, but the Lions answered on the next drive.
Lynden quarterback Jacob Hommes rushed 18 yards for the first of his five touchdowns – passing for three and running for two.
“Our offensive line was opening up huge holes all night,” Hommes said. “This is just an amazing win for us.”
Defensively, the Lions’ plan was to contain the Cubs’ prolific rushing attack to small plays, Kramme said. Sedro-Woolley’s longest run went for 26 yards, and the Cubs totaled 270 rushing yards.
The Cubs struggled to move the ball through the air, as they were limited to 29 passing yards.
“We had a great week of practice defensively,” Kramme said. “We stayed away from giving up the big runs just like how we planned.”
Player of the game
Hommes threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 147 yards and two TDs on 20 attempts.
It was over when ...
The Lions took a 28-7 lead at the end of the third quarter on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Hommes to Landon DeBruin.
Unsung hero of the game
Both Kramme and Hommes lauded the great play of the offensive line, which included Tanner Steele, Trey Labounty, Micah Smith, Edward Andrews and Ricky Lopez.
“The offensive line is our key to success,” Kramme said.
