Arlington holds off Sehome rally on night ’95-’96 Mariners celebrated
The only problem with perfection is it’s a pretty tough act to follow.
On a night that Sehome honored the 20th anniversary of its 30-0 state championship squad from 1995-96, the Arlington boys’ basketball team celebrated last, as it held off the Mariners for a 63-60 non-league win on Monday, Dec. 21.
While many consider Sehome’s 1995-96 team one of the best in state history because of its ability to pass and play together, it was Arlington that showed off its ability to move the ball Monday. It recorded nine of its 15 assists in the first half, nearly all of them finding an open man to knock down a 3-pointer.
But that shouldn’t be a surprise, as Arlington coach Nick Brown was an assistant coach for Sehome during the 1995-96 season.
But the Mariners did their 1995-96 brethren proud, storming back in the second half, trimming the deficit to three points by the end of the third quarter and then scoring the first six points of the fourth to take a 50-47 lead with 6:21 to play.
Leighton Kingma, who had to sit much of the first half with foul trouble was crucial during the run, scoring eight points in the third quarter and hitting four free throws in the fourth.
“I thought we took care of the ball,” Sehome coach Steve Call said. “Our intensity level rose, and I just love how we fought till the end.”
Turning point
Sehome had the momentum and the lead midway through the fourth quarter, when Arlington’s Drew Bryson took a feed from Donovan Sellgren, drove the lane, hit a lay-up and was fouled. The sophomore, who hit four 3s in the first half, converted the old-fashioned 3-point play to give Arlington 52-50 lead, and they would not trail again.
Final play
Sehome had a shot to send the game to overtime, as it got an open look for Kingma in the left corner, but the shot rattled out. “It was what we wanted,” Call said. “We drew it up, and he got the look. It just didn’t go down.”
Unsung hero
Logan Deboo had a team-high 23 points, including 10 during Sehome’s third-quarter comeback.
