Mark Morris Monarchs

Enrollment: 782

League: Greater St. Helens League 2A

District: 4

State appearances: 36

State titles: 3 (1978, 1985, 1987)

Coach: Bill Bakamus

Projected starting lineup

Player Pos. Yr. Ht. PPG
Will Burghardt G So. 5-10 8.1
Spencer Sweet G Sr. 6-0 8.6
Evan Troy G Sr. 6-4 11.3
Grant Gibb F Sr. 6-5 17.9
Geordi Morrow F Sr. 6-9 9.8

Scouting the Monarchs: Mark Morris had won 22 straight games before losing to Tumwater 57-54 during last week’s District 4 championship game. The Monarchs are a talented group, especially in the front court with 6-foot-9 senior Geordi Morrow, 6-foot-5 senior Grant Gibb and 6-foot-4 senior guard/forward Evan Troy. Gibb and Troy are the team’s primary scorers, while guard Will Burghardt can create off the dribble.

Key to the game: Scooter Hastings and Sterling Somers are tough in the paint. If Mark Morris can force the Lions to settle for 3s, it should help.

Player to watch: Grant Gibb has been one of the better 2A players in the state all year. Look for the senior to play his best against Lynden.

Projected starting lineup

Player Pos. Yr. Ht. PPG
Jonathan Whetnall G Sr. 5-11 9.3
Jordan Wittenberg G Jr. 5-11 6.6
Andrew Kivlighn G So. 6-2 7.0
Sterling Somers G Jr. 6-5 17.5
Scooter Hastings F Sr. 6-7 15.3

Scouting the Lions: Lynden has improved as the season has gone along, and the Lions are led by 6-foot-7 senior forward Scooter Hastings and 6-foot-5 junior guard Sterling Somers. Both have strong inside-outside games, which make the duo hard to matchup with. Jonathan Whetnall, as a 3-point threat, has been solid all season, while Jordan Wittenberg and Andrew Kivlighn are more than capable of scoring and playing strong defense.

Key to the game: Mark Morris can score. Strong defense and an inspired rebounding performance will be pivotal.

Player to watch: Expect Scooter Hastings to be determined to prolong his Lynden career.
