Sehome survives with comeback win

After suffering a scoreless second quarter, the Sehome girls’ basketball team was able to bounce back and keep its season alive with a 50-42 victory against Lakewood in the consolation first round Class 2A Northwest District Tournament game on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Skagit Valley College.

The Mariners’ Madison Ulrich led the team with 14 points and four 3-pointers. Maddy Bryan finished with 10 points and Sarah Eisses had 10 points and eight rebounds in the game.

Disaster struck in the second quarter as Sehome ended the quarter without a single point and allowed 14 points to Lakewood.

“I told them to relax and trust each other,” Sehome coach Kim Kirk said in a phone interview. “Don’t let it get the best of you. We tried to refocus and at halftime we were down nine. We reiterated to relax and trust in our teammates.”

Coming out of halftime, the Mariners were able to bounce back with a 13-10 third quarter to cut the Lakewood lead down to six.

“It felt good to get out of that second quarter and play our basketball,” Kirk said.

Then in the fourth quarter, Sehome got back to what built the early six-point lead originally and outscored Lakewood 19-7 for the comeback victory.

“We got into the rhythm that we started with. In that quarter we did a nice job moving the ball around and taking the late shot at the right time,” Kirk said. “Our kids are a tenacious group. They don’t quit. That’s what was pushing them as the season went on. They just won’t quit.”

Kirk highlighted Eisses’ second half in doing a nice job finding the basket and rebounding the basketball.

Sehome will play against Archbishop Murphy next at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Mount Vernon High School in an elimination game.

“Survive and advance,” Kirk said. “They found a way to get by the quarter. They will not end until the buzzer goes and they say the game is done. They are going hard for their teammates and the girls found a way tonight.”
