Blaine’s girls’ basketball team isn’t ready to end its season just yet.
The Borderites came out fired up on the defensive end, holding Anacortes to zero points in the first quarter on the way to a 50-34 Class 2A Northwest District playoff win on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Skagit Valley College.
With the win the Borderites move on to face Shorecrest on Thursday, Feb. 19, at Mount Vernon High School in a winner-to-state game.
“We came out, the big thing is we wanted to stop (Hope) Hurtado,” Blaine coach Ryan Pike said in a phone interview. “We did a good job holding them to one shot and out.”

The strong rebounding effort, in which the Borderites outboarded the Seahawks 46-37, came from being in good defensive position when the shot went up, Pike said.
“We did a good job of getting our hands up and keeping them off boards,” Pike said.
Taylor V’Dovec led the Borderites with eight rebounds. She also tallied 11 points.
Mandy Hayes scored 15 points, including two 3-pointers.
After struggling a bit offensively in the first half, Blaine attacked the basket in the second. The Borderites ended with 33 free throws.
“We talked about it at halftime, that we wanted to attack a lot more,” Pike said.
With Shorecrest looming on Thursday, the Borderites are confident, as every team needs to be at this point, Pike said.
“That’s the reason all these teams are still here,” he said.
Shorecrest is very athletic with a strong post that can pass and a couple girls that can run, said Pike, who stayed after his team’s win to watch Burlington-Edison top the Scots in the semifinal contest.
