Mariners lose 2A Northwest District Tournament opener 47-40

Maddy Bryan led Sehome’s girls’ basketball team with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists in its 47-40 loss to Burlington-Edison in the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Burlington-Edison High School.

“Maddy has done a great job. Especially in the second half of the season on offense and defense,” Kirk said. “Stepping up and being a top rebounder for our team. She is put on kids who are three or four inches taller than her. She is doing an incredible job with her work ethic and didn’t miss a single minute of playing time tonight.”

The Mariners’ Madison Ulrich finished with seven points and Sarah Eisses had six.

In the last 1:30 of the game the Tigers were holding on to a four point lead. But late-game fouls committed by Sehome gave Burlington-Edison its seven point victory.

“It was a close game the whole way. What it came down to was getting outrebounded tonight unfortunately,” Sehome coach Kim Kirk said in a phone interview.

The Mariners were outrebounded by the Tigers 25-17 in the game.

“Our kids did an outstanding job. Unfortunately they got more rebounds and executed. That was the difference in tonight’s game,” Kirk said.

The two posts for the Tigers were held to seven points combined. But it was the Tigers’ guards ability to grab the rebounds that hurt Sehome in the end.

“They got a shot up and beat us to the boards. We didn’t get a body on their players and they were able to get inside,” she said.

Sehome will take on Shorecrest next at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Skagit Valley College in an elimination game.

“Our kids are good to go. We basically have been in elimination games since we played Squalicum three weeks ago. We had to win against Anacortes and Bellingham. We’ve been in the elimination seat for a few weeks now and I think our team will be ready to go Tuesday,” Kirk said.
