Emily Yost had 29 points and 13 rebounds for the Mount Baker girls’ basketball team in its 62-47 victory over Sultan in a Class 1A Northwest District Tournament matchup on Friday, Feb. 13, at Sultan High School.
Emily Brandland finished the game with 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who kept its state hopes alive with the win.
Mount Baker started off hot, leading 17-8 after the first quarter and took a 31-16 lead into the locker room at hafltime.
“That was our intention. We wanted to go down there and get a good jump on (Sultan) and have a good first half,” Mount Baker coach Brenda Ellis said in a phone interview. “That’s what we did. We moved the ball around really well. Played good defense and played a solid first half.”
With the 15 point lead heading into the second half and the season on the line. The Mountaineers were able to protect its lead and come out in the end.
“I told the girls we’ve got to come out and play aggressive and remember what got us here and continue to play that way,” Ellis said.
The biggest difference in the game to Ellis was not allowing second chance points to the Turks. The Mountaineers grabbed 45 rebounds throughout the game.
“Brandland was huge on the boards. We eliminated second chances for them and that was huge for us,” Ellis said.
With the win, Mount Baker advances onto the bi-district tournament.
The Mountaineers will take on Nooksack Valley next at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Mount Vernon High School.
