Hot-shooting Sultan ends Meridian’s season

Meridian’s boys’ basketball season has come to an end.

The Trojans couldn’t keep up with a Sultan team that was on fire from long-range, hitting 12 3s on the night and pulling to a 90-72 win in the elimination round of the district tournament on Thursday, Feb. 12, at Sultan High School.

“Sultan came out and hit a 3 and then shot the lights out,” Meridian coach Shane Stacy said in a phone interview. “That’s the best shooting team we’ve run into all year.”

Sultan, although only leading by four at the half, came out in the second half and scored 60 points.

Alex Martin led the Trojans with 27 points, righting the ship after scoring nine points in his last two games combined. Kyle Young added 14 points, Nick Rautenberg had 9 and Derek Campfield finished with eight.

“Alex played well. All of our guys played really well,” Stacy said. “We just ran into a hot-shooting team. We had a hand in their face and they were knocking down 3s.”

Martin, who is averaging a team-high 19.7 points per game, leads a class of six seniors for Meridian, which also included Cody Bachman, Tanner Tutterow, Rautenberg, Thomas Utschinski and Young.

Stacy had much to say about what the seniors have meant to the Meridian program.

“The first thing that sticks out is they are just nice group of guys,” Stacy said. “It’s just been a pleasure to work with them. They came out to work hard everyday. Sometimes there are chemistry issues in groups with a lot of senior, everyone wants playing time. Never once did we have that issue with this group. They stuck together through thick and thin.”

Meridian ends the year at 13-11, falling one game short of reaching the bi-district tournament. It was the senior class’ best season yet. In 2011-12 and 2012-12, the Trojans finished 9-14. Last year, they finished 12-2.

“There is only one 1A team that gets to finish the season with a win,” Stacy said. “We can’t hang our heads here too long. We’ve had a successful season in a pretty dang good conference. ... Every team wants to go further and we’re no different but I consider this a successful season.”
