Weg’s big game, Freeman’s play lead Golden Eagles to win

No Brady Shearer, no problem for Ferndale’s boys’ basketball team. The Golden Eagles topped Burlington-Edison 74-64 in a Northwest Conference contest on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Burlington-Edison High School.

With Shearer, who is averaging 8.9 points per game, out due to a bad ankle sprain for the next two weeks, Ferndale coach Monte Walton called on Sky Freeman to step up and the sophomore stepped up, scoring 15 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.

“He came off the bench and stepped up huge,” Ferndale coach Monte Walton said in a phone interview.

John Weg led the Golden Eagles, who turned a three-point deficit at the half into a 10-point win with some strong rebounding in the second half, with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Ferndale moves to the 3A District Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 14, on the road against Glacier Peak, Marysville-Pilchuck or Stanwood.
