Emily Yost scored 32 points, Emily Brandland added 20, and the Mount Baker girls’ basketball team held Cedar Park Christian to just seven points in the second half for a 59-37 win on Monday, Feb. 9, at Cedar Park Christian in Bothell. The win advanced the Mountaineers to the second round of the Class 1A District 1 Tournament.
After shooting 22 3-pointers in the first half and making only four, Baker coach Brenda Ellis told her girls to change it up.
“We told them to get the ball inside,” Ellis explained in a phone interview.
And the Mountaineers listened to their coach’s advice. Yost benefited the most, scoring 21 of her 32 in the second half.

Trailing 30-25 at halftime, Mount Baker was able to feed off its strong second-half offense and lock down on defense.
“Our big focus was to get in rhythm offensively, and that’s what we did,” Ellis said. “Getting that helped us on defense.”
Mount Baker also had to cut down on fouls in the second half. Cedar Park still shot 21 free throws, but made just nine from the charity stripe.
“We had to adjust to the way (the referees) called it, they call it a little tighter down there,” Ellis said. “Cedar Park is really tall, so that created a challenge at first. They were quick, too.”
That experience with a lengthy, quick team may give the Mountaineers an edge heading into the second-round match-up with Northwest Conference rival Lynden Christian.
“We just played LC and we’ve seen them play a lot,” Ellis noted. “They’re long and I don’t know if anything can prepare you for that, but we’re excited for the opportunity to play. The kids stepped up and played with passion in the second half.”
Baker takes on Lynden Christian at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Lynden Christian in the second round of the District 1 Tournament.
